Turmeric – from powders and pills to cereals and liquids, it seems to be all the craze lately. Civilizations all over the world have used this ancient herb to alleviate inflammation in the body (and for a variety of other purposes).

Here’s some terminology: “turmeric” is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat inflammation, ease liver damage, reduce carcinogenic compounds in other foods, and potentially even prevent cancer. Then another substance, “curcumin”, is extracted from turmeric for increased medical effectiveness in treating a plethora of ailments. Finally, there is especially a myriad of benefits for the daily use of organic turmeric, which is produced by completely natural means, and why it should be implemented into a daily supplement routine.

Organic Turmeric Daily Use

Turmeric Tea

Turmeric is available as a complete herb from many local grocery stores. It’s also easy to slice this fairly large root herb into pieces and place it into food. Turmeric naturally warms the body and has a spice to it that increases the body’s healing ability. A popular way to ingest this herb is to boil some water and place a few chunks of turmeric with lemon into the water. Once the turmeric steeps, you can take the chunks of turmeric out and drink this very healing tonic. An ideal number for increasing the body’s anti-inflammatory abilities is three or four teaspoons of fresh or ground organic turmeric daily. One can even place organic ground turmeric into hot water and consume it as a tea a couple times of day.

Raw Turmeric Ideas

Another way to incorporate turmeric is to use the herb in soups and stews. Vegan turmeric golden stew is great way to use ground turmeric and vegetables to create a healing and heating sensation in the body. These types of stews use coconut milk, cauliflower, garlic, ground turmeric, and lemon juice to increase the alkaline effect on the body. A popular remedy for those who want to try natural supplements over medicine first is Fire Cider. Fire cider is a vinegar tonic that uses turmeric root to help the body with healing.

  • 1/4 cup fresh grated organic horseradish root (or organic horseradish powder)
  • 3 Tbsp. organic turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp. organic cayenne powder
  • Organic apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup of raw local honey, or to taste

Directions

  1. Prepare your roots, fruits, and herbs and place them in a quart-sized glass jar.
  2. Pour the apple cider vinegar in the jar until all of the ingredients are covered, and the vinegar reaches the jar’s top.
  3. Use a piece of natural parchment paper under the lid to keep the vinegar from touching the metal or a plastic lid if you have one. Shake well.
  4. Store in a dark, cool place for a month and remember to shake daily.
  5. After one month, use a strainer to strain the pulp, pouring the vinegar into a clean jar.
  6. Next comes the honey. Add and stir until incorporated. Taste your cider and add more honey until you reach the desired sweetness.

A tablespoon a day is a great way to prevent allergies and infections.

Why Supplement with Turmeric

Turmeric Supplement Effectiveness

Turmeric Supplement

It’s important to note that the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) does not regulate supplements, so any company can promote their products however they want. Before starting any supplementation, it’s important to speak to your health care professional and not stop any medication without a consultation. One of the things to look for before consuming supplements over whole foods: are there good studies on the supplement you want to take? Verify if the brand is labeled with the NSF International, US Pharmacopeia, Underwriters Laboratory, or Consumer Lab seal. These labels verify that the product contains the ingredients that the companies are promoting AND that the product doesn’t have any potentially harmful ingredients.

Finally, note that some companies may not choose to undergo testing but can still have a phenomenal product. Regardless, we would recommend sticking with organic turmeric when possible, as it often produced by more natural and better means.
