Valentine’s Day Definition

Valentine’s Day, also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is a holiday set aside for lovers to greet one another and exchange presents. Celebrated annually on February 14th of every year. It originated as a Christian feast day honoring one or two early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine who used to marry people when it was forbidden and, through later folk traditions, has become a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and love in many regions of the world.

Valentine’s Day History

It is also said that Valentine’s Day is in commemoration of Lupercalia, which survived the initial rise of Christianity but was outlawed—as it was deemed “unchristian”—at the end of the 5th century, when Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine’s Day. But it wasn’t until later that the day was unmistakably linked to love. The concept that Valentine’s Day should be a day for romance in the middle of February was strengthened during the Middle Ages by the widespread belief in France and England that February 14 marked the start of the bird’s breeding season, which people took as the beginning of the love season.
