Beauty Subscription Box 101
Depending on the company you sign up for, you will receive a box either every month or every quarter. Box delivery day is our subscription box addict’s favorite day because it’s like waking up on Christmas morning! Most boxes will give you a glimpse of one or two products before you get your box (lately, a lot of boxes have been showing full spoilers – so avoid them if you want to be surprised). However, for the most part, you won’t know which products or which variations you will receive until you start unboxing your subscription box on mail day.
Depending on the company, you may receive sample size products, full-size products, or a mix of both. Most beauty boxes contain both makeup and skincare products, but you can provide your preferences via an online quiz that they all offer. Boxycharm is one of our favorites because all of their products are full size! This makes Boxycharm one of the best deals on the market – five products for $25 (the base box) is hard to compete with!
BoxyCharm Box Choices – Prices, Frequency, and Box Value
BoxyCharm is unique in that its subscription service has multiple offerings. Stick with us here because it can get confusing. They have three box options: the base box – BoxyCharm, an upgraded box – BoxyCharm Premium, and an even more upgraded box – BoxyLuxe. The base box is delivered every month. You can add-on (requires multiple subscriptions) or opt to only receive the BoxyCharm Premium box, which also comes every month. Once a quarter, you can opt to receive BoxyLuxe in place of your BoxyCharm base box or in place of your BoxyCharm Premium box.
Please note that you cannot only opt for BoxyLuxe; you need to be receiving monthly boxes of either the BoxyCharm base box or the BoxyCharm Premium box to receive BoxyLuxe.
Now that you know the different box options and their frequency, let’s talk about value. Each BoxyCharm base box is $25/month and contains five beauty products. The BoxyCharm base box has an average value of $175. The Premium box is $35/month and contains six-t0-seven beauty products. The BoxyCharm Premium box has an average value of $215. The BoxyLuxe box is $49.99/quarter and contains eight or more beauty and lifestyle products. The BoxyLux box has an average value of $395.
Now, we will say that sometimes the product value feels inflated. Every once in a while, you will receive an indie product that is just hitting the market, and its retail value will be marked at over $100. We will let you be the judge on whether or not it feels a bit over-inflated.
BoxyCharm Products and Choices
As we mentioned above, depending on your subscription level, the number of products you will receive varies. We know the most important question is what exactly will you be getting in your box. Part of the fun of a subscription box like BoxyCharm is not knowing which products will be in your box. While some products will be displayed on blogs like My Subscription Addiction or Hello Subscription, you will not always know which products you will receive. Each month you can select at least one product from three or more options to be in your box. The rest of the box is a surprise.
Some of our most loved products from past BoxyCharm boxes have included: Kate Sommerville’s Exfolikate, which retails at $85 full size; Violet Voss HG PRO Eyeshadow Palette with 20 shades, which retails at $45; Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream, which retails at $89; Farmacy Beauty Green Clean, which retails for $22; Kypris Antioxidant Dew, which retails for $90; and Iconic London Sculpt and Boost Eyebrow Cushion, which retails for $33.
Typically, each box contains one eyeshadow palette, a skincare product, brushes, and two “filler” items like lipliners or eyeliners. The eyeshadow palette and skincare product are typically the highest value products in the box each month. BoxyLux has brought subscribers a handful of hair care products and even hair styling tools, which are pretty high value as well.
Fenty Beauty
In March 2020, BoxyCharm Premium had an entire box of Fenty Beauty products. This collaboration between BoxyCharm and Fenty Beauty brought each BoxyCharm Premium subscriber six Fenty Beauty products! While the box was valued at $143 (much less than the typical BoxyCharm Premium box), it was hard for subscribers to deny the value of the box, since they had only paid $35 for six Fenty Beauty products!
This exclusive box included Fenty Beauty Invisimatte Blotting Paper, Fenty Beauty Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipstick in Clapback, Griselda, PMS, Shawty, S1ngle OR Candy Venom, Fenty Beauty Match Stix Shimmer Skinstick in Shimmer Confetti, Rum, Unicorn, Blonde, OR Chili Mango, Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer, Fenty Beauty Moroccan Spice Eyeshadow Palette, and Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in Trophy Wife. One of the perks of signing up for a subscription box like BoxyCharm is their collaboration and access with some coveted brands that you can get access to for a much lower cost.
Extra Perks
Speaking of perks, Boxycharm members receive a lot of other perks outside of receiving their monthly box of goodies.
The Charm Room
Each subscriber, no matter what level, gets access to BoxyCharm’s Charm Room. The Charm Room is essentially a list of products you can purchase using “Charms”. Charms are earned by referring a friend, which is worth 500 Charms ($5), or by leaving product reviews for products you received in a previous box. Each review earns you 50 Charms, which is 50 cents. Each month you receive a minimum of five products, so those Charms add up really quickly.
Popup and Add-On Sales
In addition to making purchases with Charms, you can make purchases using the payment method you have on file. Each month BoxyCharm has a popup sale, which includes beauty products at very hard to beat prices (a $44 foundation for $6 as an example). If you make a purchase during a popup sale, it will ship separately from your box.
The add-on sales is a sale that allows you to add products to your box. Products may be included in other boxes, or you may not have received the products in the past. This gives you an opportunity to get your hands on these products at a lower price.

Is it worth it?
If you enjoy trying new products and new brands, BoxyCharm may be a good fit for you. For us, it’s all about the value. For the price of one product at retail prices, you will typically breakeven, and all the rest of the products are just extras. You won’t love every product or even every box, but for $25/month, it’s pretty hard to compete with. The products you don’t like can always be gifted, donated, or resold.
